KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A Kalamazoo County senator is partnering with a dental company to give hundreds of students the proper tools for next school year.

Delta Dental had 700 backpacks, filled with school supplies, delivered to Communities In School today in Kalamazoo.

The delivery was set up by Senator Margaret O’Brien, after Delta Dental told her about its mission to give school supplies to children in need.

“These parents don’t have to worry about having all the materials for kids in the entire family. So it’s good to know they have the same things as all the other kids across the state of Michigan,” said Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo chairman Tony McDonnell.

“Later in life, I think they’ll realize someone who didn’t know them cared enough about them to make sure they had the supplies, and I think that’s a lesson that they will carry with them as they grow older, and hopefully when they become an adult, they’ll give back to the community, the same way it was given to them,” said Sen. O’Brien.

Wednesday’s delivery was a part of Delta Dental’s “Pack A Smile” school supply drive.
